Dendrobium sulawesii Male
Default Dendrobium sulawesii

I bought this one last spring in flower, and it flowers again now. I'm not exactly sure what it is, as I bought it as D, sulawesii. It does look similar to Hsinying Chrysopense. Whichever is correct, the flowers are beautiful, deep red and purple/pink
I grew it outside since middle of may until today, as it's getting cooler and i dont know how low can it take.
It has four new growths, which it began quite late, since I had troubles finding appropriate light. At first it was too low and it did nothing, then too high and I burned a couple of leaves off. I found a perfect spot after that, hanged on my Stanhopea. It got full morning sun, and than dappled shade for most of the day.
Some leaves are wrinkly, as the mount dried too quickly when the heat wave stroke, despite daily watering.
The stems got nice and purple in high light, and leaves got reddish tint (but it didn't fall off). Foliage turned back green, when the temperatures and the light amount dropped a couple weeks ago.
When the bud started I tought for a couple of weeks, that they were a keiki, but then it became kinda obvious what they are. It took the buds more than two months to mature and then one week to open. The flowers were very pale compared to the spring ones, but they coloured up slowly, and now they are very vivid. Th camera (and my skills) do not do them complete justice.

Very attractive species. I think it is D. glomeratum, a synonym for D. sulawesii, not a hybrid. The hybrid D. Hsinying Chrysopense, glomeratum x chrysopterum, should have a flatter, more open lip and some hint of the golden colouring. Of course, the two parents are extremely similar, appearing more like sub-species than easily seperable species. A Rose by any other name....
