Dendrobium christyanum Male
Default Dendrobium christyanum

Second time blooming this year.
The flowers are bigger and somewhat fuller than the previous ones. And the color is more intense...perhaps growing under lights has helped a bit? hmm...

Just two days after opening, and there is still a bit green tint left in sepals.

The intense crimson color in the throat.

And the plant itself.
More buds are on the way. Yay.

Look at the size of the plant...it almost doubled its size this year, and it is still growing. The newer cane is very thick, too, almost as thick as my pinky.

The label only just said "Dendrobium christyanum var.” without any further description. The seller did not have any more information either.

As far as I know, I think this one might actually be a Dendrobium christyanum var. fuerstenbergianum, or Den. fuerstenbergianum. I've heard that D. fuerstenbergianum has much bigger growth compared to that of normal D. christyanum, and sometimes it has silver colored hair, in contrast to the black hair of ordinary christyanums.

But oh well, it is just my speculation; and I will have to call it D. christyanum, as the label says so.

Very nicely grown. I would stay with D. christyanum as the form D. fürstenbergianum is typically smaller, more as we know in D. bellatulum. These species are still confused and unclear.

Ooh, terrific! I'd love to find one of these and grow it as well as you have done!

Very nice flowers! And a happy looking plant, I don't think I've ever had an orchid double in size in a year.

It is currently mounted on a small slab of tree fern. I water it twice a day during summer; and about twice in a week during winter, just enough to prevent dehydration. Fertilizing with diluted liquid fertilizer once in a week. Good air circulation is also must.

I now grow it under the lights, under 2 x 28W 8T LED fixtures and 3 x 5W supplementary lights.

Since my balcony is unheated, the night temperature during winter months is usually at 10~15 degrees C.

But in my experience, the most dangerous thing is the hot, humid tropical summer nights: the night temperature in korean summer can get around 30 degrees C. I just turn on the air conditioner, and the plants seems to be happy.
