Default Dendrobium nobile (and linawianum)

The classic species, Dendrobium nobile.
The rose-like fragrance is wonderful.

In another angles. Color appears too blue-ish, though.

The green and purple contrast in the column is quite interesting:

Bonus: Dendrobium linawianum. The overall shape of flower is very similar to that of Den. nobile, but the color scheme of lip is different, as well as the size of the flower (linawianum is smaller than nobile).

Unfortunately, this poor guy had a serious slug attack which consumed many part of its roots last summer, during my vacation. The plant has nonethless recovered, but the weakend strength resulted in only three flowers this year.

Well done for the nobile... do you rest and chill them to stimulate blooming?

Yes, almost no water and absolutely no fertilizer during December and January. And my balcony is unheated so the night temperature drops to 10°C during winter seasons, sometimes even down to 8°C if there are particularly harsh cold spell.

Very lovely. I just read a genetic study on Dendrobium and these two species are more or less identical on the genetic level. Of course, this is using markers, not the full genome, which, in my opinion, often miss the obvious. We differentiate with our eyes, not our portable high-definition microscopes and cytology labs. Then again, handies/mobile phones were born of Star Trek. (he's dead, Jim).
