Default Nobile hybrids that don't require a temperature drop

A month ago I was admiring my friend's beautiful Den. Spring Frolic (an older H&R cross that is SO not easy to find).

Admiration turned to orchid lust when I heard that Spring Frolic doesn't need a temp drop to bloom.

Are there other nobile hybrids that will flower at a relatively constant temperature? I'd love white, or a white/green one, but am open to most any color. (Besides yellow. I'm, uh, yellow intolerant.)

Does anyone know what part of the parentage imparts this (to me) very desirable characteristic?

There is less than 15% Den nobile ancestry in this hybrid, with even smaller percentages of other species that might contribute to similar strict requirements for winter rest conditions. The predominant species in this are Den moniliforme and Den stricklandianum. They are still cool growers but will be healthy and flower well without the same degree of dry chill.

Den moniliforme x Den strickladianum is Den Ise. There are nearly 60 first, second and third generation progeny of Den Ise. That accounts for the majority of progeny for Den stricklandianum. Den monliforme is in the background of more than half of all Den nobile hybrids, but not always at a high percentage.

So, look for nobile types with Den Ise in the breeding, or a high percentage of Den moniliforme. Those should be less finicky about winter chill.

This sounds like a great question for Paul over at Orchid Trail. I know he's not as big into the nobile types as he is into all the other Dends, but he might have some suggestions.

I picked up a nobile there a couple years back (for my neighbor that tended to return the plants once they were done blooming). It was an older plant that I think Paul managed to rebloom at their greenhouse, so I'm guessing it's warmth tolerant. I haven't been able to bloom it, though, so I can't confirm that it doesn't need cool temps and even worse, it's a NOID so even if it does turn out to be temperature tolerant, I couldn't tell you about its parentage.

Is Paul a local business for you or does he ship, have a website, etc?

I seem to recall if you go to the Yamamoto Orchids Web site and look at the wholesale part of the site, they have information on which of their plants need less chilling to bloom.

The Orchid Trail site is amazing. There are enough latouria types to keep me buying for years!
