Those are some great looking blooms! I need to replace my spectabile
I have a few dens from the latouria section; this one was the one I was most looking forward to growing, this one was my favorite, this one is the only one I've killed.
Anyone know where to get a decent sized one?

Well, if mine doesn't bloom...
Seriously, H&R had a great selection and many smaller hybrid plants. Their prices are good, customer service is great, and the plants I got were top quality.

Dolly, I think your spectabile is pretty close to the right size for blooming.

Brookside has really good ones that are bushy, but more compact. Mine is huge and if it anything happened to it, I would purchase another one through them.

Thank you all for helping. OW, if my roots don't look ok, I'll switch medium as you suggested.

In terms of coaxing Den spectabile to bloom, is it better to keep it in a tight container or does that really matter?
I've read as such and many people seem to grow them in tight containers.

I read the same, part of my problem with that is the size of the plant. Yours is wonderfully upright, mine, not so much. I have to have a low, wide pot to stabilize it and even then, I bungee it to the plant stand.

The original plants in cultivation were large to very large before they bloomed. Growers have been trying to breed them down in size. If you don't know which you have it is a waiting game.
