Haha, well I'm in the humanities! The Davis of now (thank god for me) is not as exclusively ag/science focused as it once was. The closest I usually come to agriculture is when a turkey runs out in front of my car.

Den. spectabile is one of the favorites in my collection! Yours looks great. I love how the petals and sepals elongate after the flowers open up.
Is yours fragrant yet? I find the fragrance hard to describe. More spicy/herbal than floral, but I like it.

Thanks so much! I think it's one of my favorites too. For me, it's a little musky - I've heard the fragrance described as honey-like, and that sounds about right to me.
Here's a better picture that I took today . . .

Den spectabile
This pot, 6" azalea pot, fell and cracked. How much bigger to go up in pot size or not. The pot is stuffed with roots.

If the pot is full of roots, I would go up to an 8" / 20cm.

It's like that cute little puppy you bring home that turns into a Great Dane.

Dolly, I agree with e.s.
I would stick with the terracotta type pot, next size up. If you have great roots in your current medium, stick with that. But, if you are having any root die-off issues, try "lava rock" with maybe 20% coarse bark added. The leaves seem to be a good color, seems to be getting the proper light,
