Looking for Den Phals Female
Default Looking for Den Phals

My Den Phal is blooming again. It fell over outside and broke off a bunch of roots. I repotted it and it has thrown 5 spikes! I'd like to have more but don't see them at Hauserman's. I didn't see much on the net either.

I did see one on Amazon (?)...your sources would be appreciated.

They've got a bunch at Santa Barbara Orchid Estate:

Dendrobium at Santa Barbara Orchid Estate

The nobiles and phals are all listed together so you will have to go through them. Hybrids are at the bottom.

Also, if you see something you like but it's listed as sold out, you should call them. I was looking for a plant once that was listed as sold out. I called and had to wait a month, but they got one to me.

Their method of ordering is a bit.. archaic in this day and age (they do not use the cart system) but the two plants I ordered were of great quality and in very good health. I will say shipping was a bit pricey, but I can live with that considering how happy I was with the plants.

Another place:
https://www.orchidweb.com/category/a...s.html?mcat=13 - I've had a good experience with them as sell, although I think SBOE is a better bang for your buck.

Default Followed your suggestion

Salixx,
I followed up on your suggestion for Santa Barbara. They have no Den Phals. They told me to try Hawaii. They only grow, they said, for outdoor use.

Amazon has a light pink beauty and its' pricey but, comes 2 day apparently...I may try that route. There is also an orchid show coming up in South Bend in November so I'll also try that.

Seems funny that something so easy wouldn't be common as Phals. I just looked at my guy and I am so pleased that even with the fall it took and the broken roots, it is still a trooper! Thanks for your suggestions!

Ah, sorry, I guess I was thinking you were looking for the den phal type and not the species. Sorry!

I've bought from Kawamoto Orchids in Hawaii once before can say they sent me a nice plant. I don't know if they have what you are looking for, but they are a good vendor.

My first orchid ever was a Den Phal from K-Mart. Of course, I killed it promptly. The following one I killed too, so I remained afraid of Dens for a long time. I'm just starting to get interested again. It's really unfortunate that other orchids have lost out to Phals. I used to find as many Dens as Phals in the big box stores when I first got into orchids as a teenager. I, too, don't truly understand why Phals are so main stream now and not Dens and Catts, but we may never know!

You are correct: Den Phals. It should be two day shipping and I will let you know how it looks. I don't have enough light for Catts but, I do well with Epis, Oncidiums, Den Phals and Phals...and I have a Wilsonia...what ever the heck hybrid that is.
Thanks for the help, I will keep you posted.

Go to Carmela's in Hilo, Hawaii. They sell lots of them. I think they have a lot that aren't on their Web site, as well. You can see the ones I got from them almost a year ago here:

Carmela Orchids

The two Den phals in spike in the photo are: Kiyoshi Izumi x Jacquelyn Concert, right against the French door with the spike visible against the vertical mullion; and Burana Stripe, the first pot the visual line hits dropping down from the gap between the doors. That one is also in spike and still has the stuffing taped over the pot. They were both in 4" / 10cm pots. Carmela's sells these for around $10.

Both are in active growth right now. They have not reflowered, I think because I didn't water them enough. I read a lot about how easy they are to rot if overwatered, and I overcompensated. Some of their new growths wilted a little.

Err, thanks for the tip about the Dend phal on amazon.com, I have my order in too.
I had some of these long long ago, when I was a child and they were my first orchids. They were literally, stick the keiki in the soil (not potting mix) and they grew and produced flowers in a year or so.
I've been around the genuses a bit since then and many years have flown by..
I have been trying to find these for months, but all I could find was in Hawaii, and I didn't want to pay the shipping.
Wish us luck in getting a quality plant.

Well, as you know the shipping wasn't cheap! I think I will follow the Carmela's lead. I will let you know how they both turn out. I had a couple mini Catts in the sunroom for maybe three years. It is quite sunny but, it is Indiana so you never get 100% sun.I decided to give them away and stick with what does well for me.

Estacion, thank you...and that is an exciting collection! I have always kept mine underpotted in coarse bark. Now that it lost some roots, it may be trickier. I have trouble posting pics from my phone but will try.

If you are willing to wait a little, Carmela's has rotating specials throughout the year, which normally include shipping. The specials are listed on the home page, or on the Specials page. They have Dendrobium specials all the time.

Right now they have 7 spiking Dens for $72 including shipping. Shipping is normally $30 to Arizona and the plants are normally $10. If you don't have space for 7 you can give some as gifts.
