Dendrobium moniliforme seedling - keiki or spike? Female
Default Dendrobium moniliforme seedling - keiki or spike?

I got this little guy back in the beginning of summer from the Troy Meyers Conservancy. It wasn't really planned, Troy included it since another seedling I ordered was not doing well.

I'm not sure exactly when, but it started forming this little balls near the top of two of the canes. Although the plant seems like it might be too young, I thought that maybe it was flowering. Now, the little balls have grown much larger and have also grown roots. They don't really look like keikis to me but they also don't look like buds or spikes. The plant has also sent up numerous new canes and these growths look very different from the canes. I'm attaching a picture for some opinions.

Sorry if I call anything wrong - I've done some basic reading, but it wasn't a plant I planned on (but I'm not complaining!) so I'm not as knowledgeable as I'd like to be.

Thanks in advance!

I realized it wasn't very clear in the picture what I might be talking about. I think you'll get the gist, but here's a cropped picture to help focus in on the growth.

Someone coined the term "speikis" - Den keikis on the parent can bloom before they have fully developed. I can't say positively thats what you have (I don't have experience with this species), but it's a possibility

When you say the keikis blooming on the parent, you mean the adult plant producing the keiki, right? Sorry if it seems obvious, sometimes my brain takes a vacation

And, if they are 'speikis,' are they likely to develop into blooms? Or keikis? ...or worse, nothing? Or, do I have to wait and find out?

I only have two other Dens, a loddigesii and a Chan-Chao. The loddigesii keikis look quite different and, well, the Chan-Chao doesn't have any (I know it's also a Phal-type... so probably further different).
