Dendrobium jenkinsii - Orchid Board

Hi, I recently received a Dendrobium jenkinsii that is a wonderful little plant. It is in, sort of, a 2" plastic pot that it is desperately growing out of. I had thought it would be nice to move it to a wood basket and let it grow all over. I would rather not mount it as I feel it won't "fit" well on a mount due to its shape from growing around its current pot. I could move it to a larger pot, maybe clay? I really don't want to do any cutting, just let it grow.

Is it the wrong time of year to repot this plant? My other Dendrobiums are mounted, torresae, lichenastrum, cucumerinum and this is a change for me with Dendros.

What would you suggest? Thanks!

That is one cool looking orchid. That might work, it would look so nice that way. The only other thing I can think of is if you could slip it into a plastic net pot of the same size and let it do the same thing.

I have one and mine is mounted. I would unpot it and then make the decision, I bet you can mount it. I don't think there is a wrong time to repot.

Shannon, thanks I really was surprised at the tiny bulbs and leaves. I thought they were a bit bigger but the newer growth is larger than what is growing in the top of the pot. Just too cute! I'm a huge fan of the wood baskets and would like another so that might be the way I go with this. A net pot needs to be larger than this one as the plant is so overgrown it can not sit without sitting on growth. It would hang nicely in any window.

I think I'll take it out of its pot and see what the roots are like. It is in bark with rocks currently.

Wintergirl, mounting this would look nice if it will fit alright. I like cork for mounts, they can have some nice character to add to the display. I'm assuming this one is a fairly slow grower. I think you're right, I need to unpot it first. Might just be a nice weekend for a short trip to Al's, he has mounts and baskets and I'm always up for an afternoon in his greenhouse.

Have you been growing yours long? Has it bloomed for you? I absolutely love these in bloom.

I got mine in the end of May and it already has grown a couple new growths, so I think it is not so slow. Probably why it breached the pot in your plant's case.

Here are picks of when I first got it and then today. There is new growth on the top left and bottom right, so to me it's a fast grower. I water it everyday.

Me personally i'd wait til next spring to repot... as supposedly you have to give it a cool dry rest for winter for it to flower in spring? and it's more or less already fall.. Although it's a crap shoot, here i have a lot of new growth and the growing season may have another couple months since it's warm for a while... but don't know about where you're at...

I killed mine, the way, so until i get another i suppose I really shouldn't say a thing lol in my defense, I bought one i thought was healthy but was not... I'm pretty much done with species dens!

You are right. When I look at images on Google there are both small and larger leaves on those different plants but the blooms all look the same. I think I would repot now as this seems to be growing season. I have a lot of species den, I have more problems with den phal hybrids

u bada sorry you killed yours, should try another. It is fall here sort of, still nice warm temps and nothing cold about our evenings yet, 70 tonight. I think I'm ok to unpot and change things. This one has new growth that seems to be developing and I think I may have at least another month or two before the winter rest period should begin.

Shannon I agree, Wintergirls plant looks like it is larger in bulbs and leaves. This one I received has tiny leaves on the older bulbs, the ones on top in the pot. The newer growth is a bit larger but not by much.

It is so cute and well grown I think tomorrow I'll go to Al's Orchids and pick up a couple of mounts and baskets, then decide which way to go. I'm still thinking a basket will look great.

Wintergirl your plant has grown quite a lot! Looks great and I'll bet you can't wait for flowers.
