When does the winter rest start in Florida?
Default When does the winter rest start in Florida?

Hi! I recently learned two of my dens are species, so a winter rest is a must. I know some people have a hard start to winter rest on Halloween. In Florida, the days will be shorter, but it will still be hot. How do I know from my plants when to start their rest?

If you know someone with Orchid Wiz type in the name of your Dendrobium and look at the profile within the program menu there is a realistic rest period indicator

Enjoy. What species are they?

Note there is a name change for Den pierrardi now Dendrobium [Den.] aphyllum (syn. Dendrobium pierardii)
Orchid Wiz suggests "Rest last month of winter first month of spring"
for Den miyakei Orchid wiz suggests reduce during winter do not allow plants to dry out completely . Hope this helps happy growing

You can see the tree. When it collect enough nutrien to bloom, at the end of the branch, no more leave grow, the branch susdently become small. some leaves near the root become yellow and will fall off. This is the time for winter rest. Sorry for my poor English

I let nature tell me when to start- usually between Halloween and Thanksgiving; when the rains stop and nights drop to the 60s. I grow outside, so weather conditions do drastically affect my growing.

I've never grown miyakei, kept pierrardi and primulinum for years along with nobile hybrids, and they bloomed and grew well until a particularly harsh winter did most in. Currently have anosmum grown from seed and a species nobile as well as hybrid nobiles, it seems to work just as well for them.
