Registered in 1975, this dendrobium is a masterpiece of a senior Indonesian orchidist, Mr. Atmo Kolopaking. It is a hybrid with 40% Den phalaenopsis sp complex, 20% Den lineale (or veratrifolium back in the day), 20% Den macrophyllum and 20% Den anosmum.
There are a few varieties of this hybrids, some has fully coloured lips and some has more colorful petals. Very rare because this hybrid reportedly could not be selfed, cloned, or hybridized so those that existed today are divisions of the original plants. I think the problem lies with the seed parent, Den Meta Sari Mustika. Beside producing Eddy, Meta only produced one registered hybrid called Nong Assagoff. Nong Assagoff, like Eddy, is sterile, could not be selfed and could not be cloned.
I was very lucky when getting this plant today. I was just browsing around the local orchid vendors' complex not planning to buy and I saw the plant in bloom. Couldn't believe my eyes, so I finally asked the seller what was the name and he replied "Eddy Djaya Remadja".
I knew it's a rare and expensive hybrid so I didn't ask the price but the seller quoted the price anyway, afterward I asks him to repeat himself again. His asking price was about US$ 3, the price of a potted mass produced commercial Dendrobium! I didn't bargain with him and brought home an Eddy.
