Den. chrysotoxum has opened! Male
Default Den. chrysotoxum has opened!

I couldn't wait for the others to open up before posting pics of this one.

I had acquired one of these while in AK.
I couldn't get it to bloom.
I think the short 4-1/2 hr. winter day length was the problem in getting this one to bloom.

Den. chrysotoxum
Part of the Calista Section [now called the Densiflora Section]

Note in the back of the plant, just to the left of the wire hanger, between the 2 leaves - a third spike developing buds off in the other direction.
It's out of focus and a bit hard to see.
But, it is there.

The IOSPE says that it has a honey fragrance.
I disagree for this particular model, could be similar to some as honey, but not to me.

Keep in mind that orchid fragrances are a very personal thing, one person smells one thing, another smells something else.

Wow! I love the presentation and the wooden frame! Well done! Do you grow other orchids like this? What kind of wood and media?

I'm mounting only a few on these rafts, the smaller mini types that need lower lighting and more water [Dracula, Bulbos, etc], a few terrestrials [Spathoglottis', Neobenthamia, etc.], my Dendrchilums, and some temporarily like this Den. chrysotoxum that I have yet to figure out where I want to permanently mount it in the yard.

I have made them out of cedar, but am now making them from red wood.
I buy 1" [actual 3/4" thick] boards then cut them into 3/4" square strips on a table saw.

I've made a couple of assembly jigs for 8" and 12" sized rafts.
When I used them in AK, I made 6" and 8" rafts for in home use.
I cut the strips into the lengths needed, place them into the jig gluing the joints as the pieces are assembled, then clamping them down until the glue sets.
Finally, I staple the corners.

I have seen similar for sale online.
But, I do not remember where.
That is where I got the original idea to make them.

I use NZ or Chilean moss, but will be trying to modify it in the near future by adding coir to it.

How's that, more tnan you ever wanted to know.

PS
It rained heavily last night.
The weight of the water on the flowers has pulled the PB down to a horizontal position.
Haven't actually gone out to inspect it yet.
I hope it hasn't broken the PB, only bent it.
We'll see.

Thumbs up

The fact that the plant is stuning is a given, but that extra lovely wooden frame is out of this world! What a presentation!

The habit on that plant is so very elegant. The blooms add to the odd symmetry. Beautiful!
