I have this nice Dendrobium that recently bloomed and I was wondering if I could pollinate using just one flower. I'm not sure since it doesn't work on Phalaenopsis so...

I named the thread Dendrobium kingianum for a reason

The flower just dried off and died but luckily the other one was pollinated using different pollen from its own. How long will the seed pod take to form? Do seed pods form slower when the flower is bigger?

Pod should be ready to harvest in 3 months. Be careful as the pod can look nice & green but spilt in seconds. Harvest the pod one week prior to full time line to be sure. Keep cool as a sudden spike in temp' can cause early ripening & splitting.

Wait what happens if the pod splits

---------- Post added at 12:43 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:43 PM ----------

are the seeds going to drift away?

---------- Post added at 12:44 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:43 PM ----------

Or is it because the seeds will be contaminated fungus/bacteria.

Both. Orchid seeds are like dust, and blow away quickly. It is also easier to plate them in the laboratory if the pod is intact - one decontaminates the outside of the pod before opening. This allows using stronger decontaminant chemicals than seeds would tolerate, and the smooth exterior of the pod is much less trouble to work with than zillions of little pieces of dust.

is there a chance that the pod can fall off or split prematurely?

---------- Post added at 01:55 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:54 PM ----------

And does it take a long time for the seeds to germinate?

I don't know how much you already know about germinating orchid seeds. I would suggest you do some reading on the Internet. It is not like germinating any other kind of seed. You might find useful information at the

Orchid Seedbank Project.

The pod will split when it is ripe. I don't know how long this is for D. kingianum, but I'm sure you can find the information in a search, as well.

You can use the search function in the top maroon bar. This will search the Orchid Board.

You can, after say 25 days tie a "paper bag" over the seed pod/spike to capture the seed if the pod busts. It only needs to be a small bag & don't let it get wet. Yes, extra sterilizing is required but not all that bad for the seed. Any good lab', should be able to handle it well. From flasking of seed to flowering the 1st plants can be as quick as 2 years. 3 years all should be blooming well.
