Dendrobium Spectabile
I have a Dendrobium Spectabile and when I purchased the roots were healthy green and looked good but I wanted to change out the media.
I repot it in bark, perlite and charcoal mix. Now the roots look dry and brownish . One back bulbs leaf is yellowing and a slight bit of white mold growing.
I have lava rock and clay pellets I could repot it into.
It's in my south window.
I know this plant won't produce spikes until it's(( huge)) but I don't want it to die.
Should I have gotten rid of the old roots when I repot it?

The media should be kept lightly moist.
Where is the mold growing?
Make sure it's not potted too deeply - The rhizome should be at the surface of the media (or only slightly below) - especially at the most recent growths.

Ok I will prop it up higher. I think I saw some white mold towards the top of the roots but it is not noticeable in the picture . I will check Tommorrow.
Thanks Sonya

Hi! Just out of curiosity, how is your plant doing? I recently got a spectabile and am wondering what to expect as far as growth rates and what temperature it likes. Any info you have would be appreciated, thanks in advance

I bought a D. spectabile 2 years ago (bagged BettrGro plant from Lowe's). I immediately repotted into about 80% scoria (aka "lava rock") pieces, roughly 2 cm diameter, and 10% each coarse charcoal and orchid bark, in aa 12 cm diameter terracotta orchid pot. I water roughly twice a week in winter; summer outdoors, it gets whatever rain nature provides, or I water twice a week in dry spells. Cattleya light indoors & out. Weak fertilizer with added Ca from gypsum and Mg from Epsom salts during summer.
My tallest cane measures 6.5 to 7 inches (13 cm) and my first spike is developing.
