Dendrobium kingianum...mounted - Orchid Board

My experiment! I've had kingianum for 20 years now but two years ago it went into major keikei production. I potted a bunch then tried to mount a few. I ended up mounting 3...all which are blooming now! Kingianum appears to be a weed potted or mounted.

Wow! You did a great job mounting! What do you use for mounting? Is that grape wood? I love the splash of color on the lip in the second picture. One other question, in the first picture at the base of the upper leaves along the stalk, I see little nodes. What are these? I have a dendrobium with something like that as well and wasn't sure what it was???

The nodes are backup growth eyes. If the upper portion is damaged, then the nodes often sprout a keikei.

The plant is mounted on bark-free balsam fir I found lying around in the woods!

I don't think we have balsam fir here, but I know we do have fit, now I will have something else to look for while hiking this year! Did you have to do anything to the fir to prep it before mounting the orchid since the bark is not on it?

The others are on spruce with bark...nice and rough and easy for the roots to cling. Although the fir is smooth, other than a pad of moss behind the plant, they seem to cling just fine.

Yes Becca, there is Balsam in Idaho in high country. Just look around. It's the one that smells like tangerines when you crush the soft needles.

Hi Ross! I just did a search on Balsam fir in Idaho and they appear to grow and be grown in Northern Idaho. I am in Southwestern Idaho. But I saw that Balsam fir are grown for Chirstmas Tree's, and after seeing a picture, I think that is what I had for a Christmas tree. I have never smelled a tangerine smell from crushing the leaves, but perhaps that is because by the time Christmas tree's actually make it to a persons house, they are pretty dried up!
