Questions about dendrobium unicum - fragrance, and "it looks dead but isn't" Female
Default Questions about dendrobium unicum - fragrance, and "it looks dead but isn't"

Hey everyone!!

I have known of this orchid for a while, but now I am getting tempted to buy one.

What really makes me want one is the description of the fragrance. Andy (yes, the andy) has it described as "peachy" and others describe it as tangerine or apricot.
...yet others describe it as "crayola crayons" which is weird. Weirder still is that I know EXACTLY that smell from my childhood, and having an orchid smell like that wouldn't bother me, but make me nostalgic!!

Anyway, what does it smell like to you?

Additionally, Andy's Orchids says "might look dead but probably isn't" about this orchid. Is it just not a looker when it's out of bloom? What is up with it? Is it just overly skinny and scrawny? How does yours look? I've seen some bad looking ones online, but I would tolerate the ugly in exchange for the pretty blooms.

So let me know about this guy! Tell me your experience.

I got mine from Andy's almost a year ago. It's bloomed twice in that time, and although faint I would say Crayola crayons is pretty descriptive of the fragrance. It's a species that likes a dry rest, and while resting it certainly looks dead. A couple thin dry twigs with no leaves. Mine is now in the midst of its rest and after it loses the last leaf or two it will look that way again. No worries!

Definitely crayons (wax) and a gorgeous flower! One of mine looked completely dead (except the canes aren't shriveled) until I noticed the beginning of new buds a couple of days ago, the other is still thinking about it. The canes won't produce leaves or blooms again but will act like pseudobulbs, so it's an odd (exotic, in my opinion) looking plant. Go for it!
