Down this part of the world we tend to hold back on the watering to induce spiking. You can also look at a fertilizer change as well, a weak solution of Epson salts often gives them a boost. (Only one application is enough)

Even with kingianums? That's interesting. I thought withholding water was only part of the equation for dens (nobile and kingianum in particular). The other part was lowering nighttime temperatures, I've heard.
I've also heard that if you don't have low enough temperatures in winter for nobile types, you just go into keiki hell and the plant puts out so many keikis it can die, and won't flower.
Interesting how you do it. I am pretty ignorant about dens still, so I'm still weeding through all the information to find what's true and/or will work best for my situation.
I was just in New Zealand this December! What a lovely place. Near Auckland, I saw a shop selling disa orchids, which was pretty special because I've never seen them in my part of the world before!

I saw a den nobile with keikis in the store the other day, and there was just a perfect one for me to rip off. Gosh I wanted to just steal it (the plant still would have been in beautiful bloom) but I always wind up behaving myself instead haha!!
I don't really love nobile types, so I'd rather just have a small start for free than invest in a whole big plant. I do want to try dendrobium phalaenopsis orchids, though. They're just so pretty!
...and dendrobium antennatums... *sigh* those are one of my dream orchids!!
