I just divided my Den. noble
When I received my Den nobles in Dec from Yamamoto Orchids one of them was really overgrown. Roots were everywhere. It was just starting to bloom so I waited for it to start loosing it's flowers to divide it. There were over 15 canes so I decided to make three divisions.
I am fairly new to orchids and have never divided one before. First thing I did was to watch a few u-tube videos about dividing orchids. Before I started I soaked the orchid to soften the roots and cleaned and sharpened my cutting shears. I removed the orchid from it's pot and started removing the old medium. I carefully picked all the old bark, perlite and moss from between the roots. It was really packed in tight. As I removed the old medium I also tried to gently separate the roots.
After getting most of the old medium and detangling some of the roots I needed to decide where to divide the plant. I looked to see where there could be a natural division between canes and roots. After I decided where to divide the plant I tried to get as many of the roots from each division apart. I tried to wiggle it apart but I had to use the cutting shears on the first one. The second division came apart easier.
When I had three separate plants I trimmed the old dead roots. There were still lots of long roots so I had to wind them into the new pots. I put Miracle Grow Special Orchid Mix around the roots. Each new plant has at least one new cane and several old ones. I think it worked out well and it really wasn't that difficult. Now to wait and see if they grow new roots and canes.
