I'm not actually very good with the warmer growing dens either. I can never get their canes to grow and mature to the sizes that they should. I don't seem to have that problem with my trantuaniis though - maybe it's because they don't seem to need the floods of water and fertiliser that the others do during their growing season. They're a little more tolerant of my habits, and seem to grow quite well in intermediate temps.
Here's a pic of my trantuaniis (the colour's a bit yellow - they're more the colour green from the pic in my first post):
I grow some mounted, and one potted, and they are all starting spikes, so I think the fact that yours is potted is fine. One thing you did mention is that yours is on the edge of the grow lights. These like very, very bright light - some growers even keep them in with their vandas, and one grower I know with a greenhouse even puts them right up the top near the glass in winter. If you look closely at the pic above, you'll see burn marks on some of the leaves - the result of me putting them in direct sun a little too early at the beginning of the year. So even though they like bright light, you have to get them used to it, so I would move yours in under your grow light gradually until it's right underneath.
I feel I should point out that even though mine are spiking now, I'm still not getting their culture right since they are spring bloomers even in cultivation and therefore should only be spiking in Feb/Mar. Also, they are meant to lose their leaves in winter, and none of the growths that have grown in my conditions have properly dropped their leaves. It's kinda just luck that they've decided to spike - I don't actually know what I did!
