What a great list! Thanks! Just curious, have you noticed a fragrance on any of these varieties?

Interesting! The growths on mine have never topped 1.5 inches. I've had mine for well over 5yrs now (lost count) and grow it in a terr.

Oh, you mean "Stinky Baby"? Not a big fan of that one either and know a number of other folks who would agree. I remember, one year, a gent -- a member of my old os -- who brought a 3 or 4 spiked plant to put in the society's display. I had commented that it must have been a bear to try and bring such a big plant in their car without breaking any of the spikes. He commented that although that was indeed challenging, the worst part was the stench. Being stuck in the closed confines of the car with that many Sharry Baby flowers emitting their fragrance he found to be downright nauseating. Despite being the middle of winter, he had found it necessary to roll the windows down part way intermittently to "clear the air."

This is another that I would have to say is most definitely not a compact grower. It is a mini (plant well under 6inches tall). Flowers have a sweet fragrance. Blooms intermittently for me throughout the year.

I have heard that there are some of the nobile types coming out now that do not require much of a cooling period if any at all.

Dendrobium peguanum is another mini/micro mini that does not need a cooling period.

Are you sure you're thinking about the rigidum? Mine are very small.

I consider anything under 6" to be compact. I have been growing 2 for several years...one on a mount and one in a tiny clay pot. Very small...rambling a bit, yes...but easily kept under lights or on a window sill.

As for the smell...I think they stink. To me they smell like moth balls. The fragrance is the reason I've nearly gotten rid of them several time...can't stand it. But, I always end up keeping them because they are reliable bloomers and they put on a nice show for quite awhile.

Mini - no...but I definitely consider these compact/short growers. The one in the pot...that's a 4" pot but the plant it actually in an even smaller pot sitting inside that 4" pot.

Katrina, "mini" is anything which remains under 6". "Compact" is anything within the range of 6-12". This is based on AOS judging standards.

This portion of our discussion exemplifies the desirability -- IMO -- for a commonly accepted set of standards to be used by vendors and judges. As someone who is "space-challenged," I find I must try to restrict my acquisitions to mainly mini's and micro minis. I have run into vendors who bill any plant under 9" tall as "mini". I have learned, over the years, that before buying a plant to inquire as to its maximum size if it is a plant with which I am not familiar.

LOL! It is funny how differ scents are experienced by different folks. I wonder if particular strains might have differences in fragrance or if it is just a matter of different noses? (I once had a bulbo in bloom that received 5 or 6 different scent labels from as many people.)

Your plants look awesome, btw.

Huh...I didn't realize AOS had judging standards on size...outside of flower size that is. I learn something new every day.

And yes, you are sooooo right! Plant size is often an area of great confusion. I'll have to search the AOS site for their listing of sizes.

Yep...different noses can smell radically different fragrance. Plus, some people (myself included) have very sensitive sniffers and that adds to the differences. I can smell someone smoking 3 houses away and my neighbors running their dryers. No lie...I can tell you what dryer sheets several of my neighbors use. LOL! My husband jokes that I must have bloodhound in my background. XD

Thanks for the compliment on the plants.
