My dendrobium microchip is fragrant, but I haven't decided if the smell is good. It's kind of sweet.

My Dendrobium microchip is fragrant. It is an antiseptic scent like Listerine mixed with camphor. The flowers are yellow with speckles. The flowers last a long time--three months.

Mine's kind of sickeningly sweet. Like candied meat.

Den spectabile. Amazing, fragrant,no rest period, hot to warm temperatures(18 C is the minimum it can tollerate), and it likes even direct sunlight.

Dendrobium in section spatulata or den phals. Many of them couldn't take cold climate, if you want something fragrant, try Den canaliculatum

I have yet to ever see an olig that could be considered to have "compact" growths (6-12" tall). Twould be a truly impressive sight to see one at that size. Typical oligs are micro-minis to minis (6" or less). Have never noticed a fragrance on mine. I'll have to remember to check next time it blooms.

A cautionary note -- if size is a factor, keep in mind that this species gets HUGE. The ones I commonly see at shows (not the for sale ones) are 3ft or more in height. (One particularly nice specimen was a bit over 5ft.)

Paul, my oligophyllum made growths in the 6-7" range when I grew it shady and very moist, grown bright and drier they never topped 3-4" so I agree that it's more appropriately called a 'mini'. And it was pretty powerfully fragrant when it got more than a few blooms going, usually in the morning when the sun really warmed it up. The smell is what I've heard a lot of people describe as 'honey,' but to me it smelled musky in a not-great way. Then again I don't enjoy a lot of popular orchid scents like Oncs. Twinkle and Sharry Baby, etc., so don't go by my nose!
NYCOM, you're right that the nobile-dominant hybrids in Section Dendrobium are reluctant to bloom without some nights below 60 F, but the modern moniliforme- and unicum-dominated hybrids like Super Ise and Pixie Charm don't seem to need the same cool temps. My Den. Kokomo (Ise x Kurenai) blooms 3-4 times a year with a few flowers each time if I keep it indoors (65+ F) all the time, but blooms en masse if kept below 50 F at night for several weeks in the fall. Den. parishii is another compact species in this section that blooms well if kept warm as long as also dry and bright.

Oh, and Dens. aberrans and normanbyense (parents of Micro Chip) are nice plants that should grow and bloom well in a windowsill, didn't see anyone mention these yet.

I have barely had these two plants for just over 6 weeks or so, but I was lured into buying Dendrobium Angel Baby 'Little Darling' AM/AOS and Dendrobium Sakura 'Hime' based on marketing that they are compact, fragrant and do not need cold temperatures to flower.
The Angel Baby has had several open blooms since I bought it. The scent doesn't waft, but if you stick your nose in the blooms, they have a heady honey/jasmine fragrance. Flower buds are now forming up and down two of the more mature canes.
The Sakura 'Hime' has not flowered yet, but now has several flower buds starting to form. It appears to be perfectly healthy but has recently started dropping some of its older leaves. I interpret this as "winter" shedding.
Both of these were recently reported, have nice healthy roots and stand about 8 inches tall. Both plants came from Norman's. I grow under T5HO lights with a reduced winter photoperiod.

I only have one Dendrobium, but I have to mention it here too (I love it so I'm trying to convince people to getting one of their own).
Get a Dendrobium normanbyense. It's small, faintly fragrant (smells of vanilla, or at least mine does), and doesn't require any temperature drop to flower, as far as I know. At least no cool resting period is required.
I grow mine on an east facing windowsill, and it seems to be a very happy little plant. It gets a bit chilly there during autumn/winter, but no major temperature drops.
It seems a really easy Dendrobium to grow and flower, so I highly recommend it.

Below is a nice mix of Dens that do well under lights in the winter and outside in the summer. I have been growing all of the following for several years and none require cool temps to bloom. My lowest winter temps (at night) is 58...day time runs in the low-mid 70's.
All of these do best w/bright light...catt level.
All are growing well and bloom reliably.
Den bracteosum (compact plant)
Den hercoglossum
Den hymenanthum (mini)
Den malbrownii
Den Mingle’s Sapphire
Den rigidum (compact grower)
Den tannii (compact)
Den wassellii - requires somewhat drier conditions during the winter. You want it to shrivel just a little bit...this results in better flowering.
I am growing a number of other dens but if I haven't bloomed it yet then I didn't include it in the listing. Dendrobium is a huge genus and I'm sure you'll be able to find some that will grow well in the space you have.
You could start your search on Andy's....
Andy's Orchids - Orchid Species - Power Search results
He lists the preferred conditions/temps/etc of all his plants. You can also do a search by conditions.
Happy hunting!
