Dendrobium Formidable 'Yukiko' in Bloom
Default Dendrobium Formidable 'Yukiko' in Bloom

So this one is finally open!

I have an older thread showing the progress of the bud growth, but I thought I would start a new one here.

This is a first bloom and the newer cane looks like it will make a flower or two as well.
Rather a large sized flower on just 8 in tall cane, it resembles cattleya of some sort as I was told.

Thank you, Mel!

What a beauty! The plant appears to be of the nobile variety? If so, you should be rewarded with many more blooms in the coming years.

Good growing Neil. I'm glad you were able to get the plant to bloom. The flower(s) will last for weeks. The mother plant is over 3 feet tall and produces large blossoms 2-3 times per year. You have a keiki that came off the mother plant.

Thank you very much!
I can already see the great potential as the other cane looks like it will have about 5 flowers or that's at least how many swollen nubbins I see near the top of the cane.

Is Thomas Wayne considered a difficult grower?
It has done nothing the entire time it has been here with me. Well, other than growing roots in the pot I can see through the clear plastic pot it is in.

Fortyniner is sprouting a few nubbins and I hope they are flower buds. I'm very excited!!!

No, this dendrobium belong to a group called Formosae or nigrohirsute, meaning dark hair because the entire plant is covered with short black hair.
When the growth is very young and you are not familiar with this plant like I was with this plant back in the summer, you will think the new growth is rotting. lol

This is a primay hybrid involving formosum and one other highland species.
