Dendrobium Roy Tokunaga

What a coincidence - I was just about to start a thread on one of the hybrids of this orchid. Beautiful blooms, by the way - I just love the angular pristine white blossoms. I apologize in advance for the hijack, but HOW do you grow this one?

I have dend. roy tokunaga x nora tokunaga and it has sulked for 2 years It produced a new growth last summer, only to have it rot off even though I did absolutely nothing different. It tried to make another one late summer and it's much shorter than the existing growths which have, over the 2 years, dropped leaves and shriveled although they aren't dead yet. I have noticed a new growth appearing just a month ago - should these be kept constantly moist when in active growth? I've been letting mine dry out completely and I think that this may be the problem.

Not sure about Roy's needs, but a little on Nora. I grow mine in a GH. It sits up high in the warmer/high light parts. I grow intermediate & warm plants. Humidity is pretty high, so is air movement. When the nightime temps go below 65 I start watering it less. I think it only got 3 waterings in dec and 1, maybe 2, in jan. It has one maturing cane getting ready to spike, 2 other spikes an inch long developingon old already flowered canes and a new growth that is 1 1/2" that started about mid dec. In dec I was also stingy with the thermostat and let nights drop to 53.3F, currently the night temps are 58-59F. 55-85% humidity. It's planted in plastic pot that sits in a clay orchid pot. The mix is pearlite and a white chalky rock, the name illudes me at the moment... In the summer I water it as much as 5 times a week.

Thanks orchidaholic! Good to know that it is a warm/intermediate grower for you - I should probably water it much more. I just found out that mine has spider mites ... tragic as they are consuming this new growth it's trying to put out. I'm going to start a strict regiment of soap water and see if it improves

I have one of this I love it and it's been in bloom for me for over 6 months now. It just keeps send up new spikes. I had the nora tokunaga as well but I gave it away last summer at my wedding.

I water my roy often, usually at least twice a week in winter and in the summer it's almost every day especially when the temps get up in the 90's. It's growing in a bark and spongerock mix.

I slack on the wateing on all my dendro's(all types) in winter cause I found that most types seem to have rot issues if watered to much in winter. It may want more watering than what I give it but neglect seems to work well for me with my dendro's in MY conditions. Note... My conditions are mine alone, my lighting, humidity, air movement and temp flux is different from my neighbors and yours.... everyone just needs to find the right medium in their own growing environment for each plant and arrange accordingly. Keep looking up and asking for info on your hybrid and adjust accordingly. Experimentation is key to finding perfection.
