New Yamamoto dendrobium flower question Male
Default New Yamamoto dendrobium flower question

Hi all,

I recently got a dendrobium nobile hybrid in bloom from an orchid sale. Just a couple days ago, I noticed that some parts of the petals have gotten to be translucent, and I can see veins when the flowers are put to the light. The petals didn't lose their color, they just got a lot lighter. These sections are also floppy.

Is this the natural dying process of the flowers, or a virus of some kind?

Thanks.

Sounds like it could be natural whithering from age, or from change in environment.

What part is floppy? Can you post a photo?

Beautiful color. I wonder if the plant carries a virus? Hopefully, I am wrong. Just my 2

Maybe the experts on this board can give you a better diagnosis.

Could the flowers have gotten water on them/too much sun?

They are just getting old and getting ready to fall off.

These flowers can last up to 3 months under ideal conditions, but however long they may last, when the flower near the end of their life, they lose color and texture before falling off.

Were these already open at the time of purchase?
If so, were these clear markings present then?
It could be that they have been in bloom for a while.

I had this similar colored variety, one was Red Emperor Prince and the other Akatsuki, the latter being closer to your flower color.
When the flowers on my Red Emperor aged, they just turn ugly and floppy overall before dropping off.
But some flowers on my Akatsuki did had these clear or white markings only near the very end of the bloom, and they stayed in bloom for months.

If you have some more buds to open, see how they develop to compare.

It seems to me they are either just getting old, or maybe were exposed to too warm or cold temps when you transported it home. Something like that rather than virus.
