Spilting canes, wtf??

I was just looking and one of my Dens and noticed the canes are all spilting, almost everyone of them.

It's blooming also the roots seem good to me.
It looked fine this morning after I watered it. Does anyone know why this is happening??

I'm not entirely sure Gloria, but in general with other plants vertical splitting is because of internal pressure - mostly caused by too fast growth/too much water uptake. Though I don't know exactly what causes a plant to take up more water than it can easily accommodate.

Shakkai, I can certainly go along with that -- Too much internal pressure.
But I do still question why this time?
Funny thing is that the back bulbs with no leaves remain the same, these are very small in size but look fine
I raised this orchid from a little spit. I'm just unsettled about the whole thing.

I think as long as the splits dry and no infection gets in, then - although looking a bit unsightly - it shouldn't harm the plant. So try not to worry too much!

I've got an Odontioda whose pseudobulbs split - several of them all pretty much the same time. I sprinkled cinnamon on the splits to dry them out, and it seems fine now, putting on new growth... (Which isn't splitting, thank goodness!) In the case of the Oda. I never figured out what the cause was. The mature pseudobulbs certainly weren't growing...

Your description sounded kinda similar. Maybe someone with more knowledge of plant structure & growth will chime in!?

Have you changed the water you use or how often you water?. With plants in general, this is because of a big change in osmotic pressure from something like suddenly switching to r/o, distilled, or other source of pure water after a long period of mineral rich water or vice versa. Or from long periods of under watering. The chemical concentrations on both sides of the cell wall try to reach equilibrium by absorbing water into the "saltier" side of the memberane. At times the cells become so full, stems and fruit will split.

Well its a new day and things can improve
Shak, I was worried about some infection getting in, but they have healed up so fast just overnite, I aint gonna worry about it.

Jim, I haven't change the water source but I have changed how often I do water compared to the warmer months. I do allow it to dry for atlease one day, then water. I know what you mean about the fruits and water, I've had tomatos spilt on me a few times, still tasty though

I have some idea on what may have happened ..
The nite before I forget to turn the heat on, it was fairly chilly in the basement grow room, although I don't know what the temps was. I turned on the heat and all my lights - decided I would water earlier that morning around 5:am.

I think it was the tempt of the water I used - too warm on cold roots, then back into a room that was already chilly, then just to heat up again??

Jim, I think you may have identified what happened with my Oda. as this was around the time that I switched from using tap water to rain water.... Thanks for mentioning the change in water! I hadn't thought about that.

Gloria... water temp? Hmmm... that's another whole can of worms, isn't it? I'm sure temperature could have a lot to do with moisture and nutrient uptake.

Maybe its an Australian hardcane dendrobium and is taking the genus splitting thing a bit too literally?
