I have been using "velcro tape" - can be found at garden centers and the like. It works well for me, as it can be adjusted as canes fatten up, or to move higher on the cane as it grows.

This is really gorgeous. Love how you've staked it. Gives me hope for my three inch baby cane at home....someday.....
