Watering a deciduous dendrobium?
Default Watering a deciduous dendrobium?

I got a NOID dendrobium from home depot in november. More like I saved it- they had it sharing a pot with a fern. The flowers were excellent and long lived, but immediately after the leaves started turning yellow and dropping off one by one. I thought it was dying, then I was at an orchid show last week and saw an orchid that looked exactly like mine doing the same thing. It was labeled Dendrobium Burana 'Red' and I can't be 100% sure thats what mine is but they did look exactly alike. I asked the guy selling it and he said it is deciduous. So I'm wondering- is it bad that I've been watering it once a week? Should I stop? When will it grow again? This is my first experience with a deciduous orchid.

Did the flowers bloom from a spike at the top of your cane-pbulb or on the sides of your canes?

Googling "Burana Red", I got a suggestion for Burana Red Star ... images look to be a Phal type, not deciduous ... Den-phals may drop an old leaf here or there.

Even if yours is a deciduous type, they don't typically do a leaf drop this time of year, tho one or two old leaves may drop. Usually, they have already started to come out of "dormancy" by this time, and want water and fertilizer.

Can you post a photo of your plant?

The spike grew from from the tip of the cane. I've attached a picture of the sad plant.

You saw a plant that looks similar to yours in an orchid show....
Home Depot will sell Denphals for mass production and not any advanced sophisticated hybrid Dendrobium types.
And looking at your picture it is a Denphal.
Believe me, the plants may look alike but never assume that your plant is also a 'Burana Red'.
Its a NOID from Home Depot.
The warmth, moisture and humidity must be maintained, bright light and air flow. It seems the plant was dehydrated from the shelves.
I suggest you follow the Denphal culture.

Evergreen Dendrobiums yield blossoms periodically throughout the year while deciduous Dendrobiums undergo periodic dormancy after which they grow anew and then yield blossoms.
Be careful=by assuming it is decidious, you might kill your plant.

My first thought looking at the picture is it doesn't look like a Deciduous one.
