Discount Dendrobium- ID and care?

Hello!

Today I bought a Dendrobium from the discount table at my local greenhouse.

I have no experience with dendrobiums and would like some advice. The plant is in a very flimsy plastic "pot" filled with soggy moss. I feel like repotting it right away after the flowers drop. Is that when it's dormancy is supposed to begin?

Any suggestions would be welcome. What should I do with it? What potting mix should I use? What type of Dendrobium is it?

I don't think this one will go dormant. Soon you will see new growth start, probably while still in bloom.
It is a Den phal. Likes a lot of LIGHT not sun. Give it early morning sun and it should be good to go....Jean

My understanding with Den phal hybrids (which is what yours looks to be) is that they like a fast draining mix. Soggy moss is not good for them, and I'd be worried about the shape that the roots are in--in fact I would repot sooner rather than later, even before it finishes blooming. Go with a pot that looks "too small" for the plant--they prefer to be potted tightly...

It is top heavy, so it is good that you secure the plant by putting it in a heavy container. All of mine are either in thick thick clay pot or in a thin plastic pot slid in heavy container.

Did you mentioned soggy moss??? try and let it dry out. or try to keep them plant rather bright and warm. Do not water until the moss gets bone dry.
Yours do not have many leaves left, which find odd, but since it does not have many leaves and no new growth yet, it can be kept rather dry.

It is dendrobium hybrids as others mentioned.
This plants does best in very bright and warm conditions year around, but cooler (although nothing under 60, which is still pushing it a bit) and drier winter is acceptable.

I grow these in bark mix. Any fast draining mix with some moisture retention is great for these. During the warm season when the plant is in growth mode, water and fertilize heavily. These usually flower in the fall, but can bloom whenever they want.
At least mines do. most of them bloom in the fall, but then there is always one or two that bloom at any time of the year. spring, summer, winter...

easy plants, but very beautiful and long lasting!!!
