Dendrobium Atroviolaceum
I have this plant only since September, I was excited to see spike growing, and it is beautiful, but it did produce only 2 blooms. I hope next time it will be better, I love the shape and color of these! This is not deciduous Dendrobium, so I just lower watering and fertilizing in the winter time.

Dang!, I was about to say how much I need to look into these as well - but my rule is nothing over medium sized!. I have to stick to it or else I'll end up having to buy another house, bulldoze it, and set up a GIGANTIC greenhouse just for big growers lol.

Nice! I do not reduce water or fert for Latouria Dens (except spectabile, of ones I have) tho due to cooler temps, do water less frequently - but I don't allow media to dry completely, and fertilize weekly-weekly. Remember, it is winter now, and your plant has been in spike - best to keep up the fert while spikes/buds are growing.
For those that like these, but find them too large, check out Den normanbyense
Dendrobium normanbyense bud watch
- formerly named Den atroviolaceum v pygmy

Thanks much Sonya, I do not let completely dry for sure, but I do not fertilize as much as in the summer, I guess I will keep the care pretty much the same year round for this one otherwise cold front comes:-) Many thanks!

I just can't get exited about doing Dens yet. I do love the blooms and when I see them I think well, but for some reason the resting, what ever I am not exited about it.
I had some once and killed them, got them free from my friend. I may have not killed them they could have been in a rest, I had no idea.
Is there something wrong with me? Usually if I like the blooms then I want the plant. Well it may be a good thing.

No-Pro-mwa, everyone has different favorites, my favorites are mostly all orchids, I'm not crazy about some due to the fact I do not know or can't grow them well here, I love all the Phrags blooms and Paphs blooms, but I do not "like" them in my collection, I have always hard time to grow them and they never bloomed for me yet. However, Dendros, one of my FAVORITE of all, this family has thousands of different ones, mini, small, medium large, such a difference in blooms! I wish they were actually not so big, because I don't have more space for them, I would have hundreds:-) Regarding the care, and winter rest, will see, this is the first year I am actually doing proper rest, but if it is not Dendros, than it is Catasetums with their growing cycle, or Habenaria with tubers, etc. So, It does not bother me much, actually less work for me for a few months:-)))
