Does D. anosmum need any kind of rest?
Hi all,
Have had D. anosmum for some time now and it looks really good. I was just wondering how to get it to flower. Does it need a rest from watering? More light?
Right now I try to put it in a windowsill on sunny days. Otherwise I put it under some t5 grow lights.
I water it every two-three days, as its in some loose pine bark in a warm to hot location (t5 lights).
Thanks for any help.

I mist mine on sunny days (gh) starting in January through February. Don't be surprised if you don't totally lose the leaves. Mine blooms in early spring while the new growths pop out.

So, should I wait until January to keep drier? Or should I start now. It sounds like you only give it a month's winter rest, or is it more??

Everyone has different ways, I was confused about it so much, but I decided to follow the directions from the man who runs Dendrobium group on facebook, and he is growing many here in Ft. Lauderdale. He went through my complete list and gave me exact info on how he treats them. Anosmum he stops watering in November, except the natural rain, no fertilizer since October. I did stop water just last week for all that need winter rest, as he sent me the info. Will see!

For all Dendros, the rest ends up with new growths or when in buds/spike after the winter. So once the buds will be on the canes, I will start water again and than fertilize, some time in the spring.

I love that Tommy is helping Tindo with his anosmum....the junior helping the senior member....and Tommy is right=I also do that rest method.... Brooke has a very important tip: sometimes my anosmum do not lose leaves so I don't know when to start the rest....since Brooke is in a different time zone and grow zone=I will start my rest on December 22 when officially winter starts and end it on Valentines day or when I see new buds forming....

Here is a picture of my Dendrobium anosmum.
it is starting to yellow on some of the leaves but since majority of the leaves are green, I will start withholding water on December 22 whether it still got leaves or not....

:-)
I just shared the info I got from very professional Dendro grower, I was really confused, with so many Dendros I did purchase, every page, every book says something different, so I turned to someone who grows mostly Dendrobiums, only few miles away from my house, so the same conditions, and I asked for detailed care for the whole collection. He actually told me about some that I have read need distinctive winter rest to only reduce water and fertilizer, so I was surprised, but than again, he is a pro, and his Dendros are blooming every single year, even the ones I did not dare to buy, like victoria reginae, thinking after reading a lot about this one it will never bloom here due to the luck of cold weather, and he is growing it and blooming, in the shade and in the moss as it would grow in the nature, it blooms for him several times a year (of course must order that one immediately after reading his answer:-))) I was planning to withheld water later as well, like the second part of December, but he told me specifically that he stops for any that needs winter rest already beginning of November except the natural rain falls, I am already late, which is fine. My Dendros are very slowly only starting to loose some leaves, anosmum not even one yet, but they are not growing anymore. It is hard not to water, even the keikis that are already at least 6 inches he said, but will see, this is the first proper winter rest year, so the spring will show:-))) Fingers crossed!

Tindo....as Brooke advised: spray it if the canes shrivel on a bright sunny day....this is not a Catasetinae where you completely withhold water.... I spray it until damp every 10 days until it gives me buds....
