Suggestions
Hi all, I am being asked to suggust a number of Dendrobiums to add to our local conservatory inventory. They can be species and/or hybrids. They already have 106 plants but many are duplicates. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks

I recommend Dendrobium moniliforme - the Japanese Stone Orchid. This species is found in Japan. It is a miniature plant and produces small, long lasting, fragrant flowers. I acquired these plants from New World Orchids, Orchids Limited, and Seed Engei. They are very easy to grow.

I agree with the above poster, and would add kingianum to that. It grows like a weed and has a strong fragrance of honeysuckle in the morning when the sun hits it. A wonderful late winter bloomer!

This is a Phipps Conservatory and they already have both purple and white kingianum and 2 moniliforme but they are duplicate clones. Other species they have are anceps, aatavus, cristata, eximun, goldschmidtianum, moschatum, nobile, speciosum, spectabille, tannii, thyrsiflorum vaginatum and wassellii. So looking for others that should be in a collection.

Good you clarified what you already had! Maybe someone else with a more extensive collection of Dendrobium will see the list you have now posted and recommend a Dendrobium not on this list?

Dendrobium chrysotoxum or Dend. anosmum would be nice.

I have only a limited knowledge of the genera and am only familiar with what I grow.
Having said that, I think a representative of the sections would be a good collection for visitors to view. That's what I would like to see at a conservatory/botanical garden, how varied just one genera can be.

What conditions are available at the conservatory? I'd agree that if possible, representatives from the 6 subsections of the genus would be great; alternately, I also like it when a collection features one species in all its forms; it would be interesting to focus on the myriad kingianum primary hybrids or the wide range of moniliforme cultivars...
Just my 2p,
Adam

Just any dendrobiums...?
I think you should look into adding jenkinsii or lindleyii, and I also think that the cuthbertsonii is a charming plant and a bit different. Then there is of course Dendrobium senile and perhaps lasianthera and I also think that a dendrobium Sonia is a strikingly beautiful plant when it's in full bloom.
Den victoria-reginae is an interesting plant and....wow, there are so many stunning plants to choose from! I could go on and on.
