Default Dendrobium victoria-reginae

species from The Philippines; cool-warm growing; fairly low light

Well! This one is very happy this year! I've had this about 4 1/2 years. The previous years, it would get 1 or 2 spikes of 2-3 blooms.

This year, it has already had a few small spikes develop, but perhaps due to hot weather, buds dropped without fully developing, started to open but didn't get far, or opened but didn't look very good It now has a few spikes (some with quite a few blooms) blooming, plus still more developing! I think the increased blooming is partly due to simply having more mature canes (a few of which are keikis) - it was a small plant when I got it, and perhaps partly due to different growing location (moved it in winter to a sunnier spot, than in spring to a shadier area).

This is potted in a combination of perlite and pumice which is watered frequently in spring, summer, early fall, to keep the media from drying out - in winter, media is allowed to become dry, but not remain so for long.

It grows outdoors year-round here in the south San Francisco bay area (zone 9), taking short periods down to freezing overnight in winter (but sheltered from frost/freeze), and short periods up to / just over 100 summer days (shaded).

Fairly impossible to capture the color correctly - color of many photos looked correct (or very nearly so) on my phone, but not so on my computer - many looking bluer than they are. Actual color is a beautiful, saturated, deep blue-violet. On my computer, at least, I think the third pic is the most accurate color.
** looking at the pix here on my phone color is fairly accurate **

Thanks for looking

Thanks!

I had been a bit frustrated only getting a handful (or less) of blooms previously - I'm very happy with all the blooms this time - as well as more spikes developing!
I do love the color of this one, too

Thanks, nikki!

I haven't found this one to be difficult, but I realize that the same plant can seem undemanding to one person, and difficult for another - care habits, as well as one's climate playing into that, of course.

Thanks I am hoping that it has kicked into gear as far as blooming now

Some of the pendant canes (now blooming) ARE keikis - after blooming - when new growth starts, I guess ? I can see if I can get any off in one piece - I recently tried removing a couple keikis from a very similar Den; the largest came off fine, but the smaller one just broke off from the parent, leaving the roots behind

Thanks Bud! I'm happy to see it bloom again, too - especially with more than a handful of blooms

Mine has gotten quite a bit bigger over the last year - keikis have matured and are big!, and new canes are much bigger than older ones.

Sorry yours didn't bloom Mine was rather disappointing last year - just two flowers

A stunning display. I might have to get me one of these some day after seeing your blooms.
