Den. Heterorarpum - please help Male
Default Den. Heterocarpum - please help

Hi Guys
I am not quite sure what went wrong with my Heterocarpum. Got it in July from Hawaii, it was looking good, though new growths were weak, but lot of growths, lot of keikis, and the main cane was pretty strong and long. I did water like my other Dendros, and it was not even raining much these days, fertilizing the same like all my other orchids, from time to time seaweed. 3 days ago I did see some leaves started to turn yellow and fall, but i did think it is fine. Today when examined i did see, that the canes at the bottom turn to softy yellow horrible looking shrinking stage. I am not sure if it is dying, if it get over watered, or what has happened. I quickly took it out of the pot, and the root system was not soggy or wet at all except roots on the top. I decide to mount it, which I wanted to do from the beginning but when I got it it was so big I decided not to. Not sure if you can see from the pics whats the problem, I would welcome any suggestions or diagnose and treatment if still possible

Correct your spelling= it is Dendrobium heterocarpum.

Relax, do not worry. Your plant probably had an early dry rest. Listen to your plant. I do not see anything wrong in the pictures you presented. This deciduous Dendrobium specie have leaves that only last one season ….water should be reduced in the winter or after the leaves are shed; provide with a cooler drier rest (your plant must be in early stages of rest).
This is a widespread and variable species that is endemic to Sri Lanka, India, Burma, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, southern China, south to Peninsular Malaysia, Java, Sulawesi and east to the Philippines. Your plant must have already flowered. Its longlasting flowers are sweetly fragrant (they have an unusual melon scent) however some of the plants from the Philippines are not fragrant….water and fertilize regularly when it is in active growth spring to late summer. Long-stemmed plants that tend to grow pendant are best allowed to hang (you have good instincts about your plant in deciding to mount it). Flowering occurs on the older leafless growths and the newly produced growths usually shed their leaves in the next season. I would recommend a winter minimum of 50F but plants will tolerate lower temperatures for short periods if they are dry at night.
Try not to give it water or fertilizer for a couple of weeks; the early morning dew will take care of it....if the canes shrink you may spray it a bit....then continue water and fertilizer if you see new growth(keiki) or buds

it is a specie so the 'H' on heterocarpum must be written lowercase 'h'
