Have you tried any of the tetraploid cuthbertsonii? I've found some of the recent line breeding has resulted in the plants being a little more adaptable. Its not easy feat to grow them in Sacramento, but I get by fine. I'm not able to flower them like Tom @Golden Gate Orchids, but given an adequate night/day differential and water with low TDS they do well.
'Lafayette' x 'Christopher John' or the reciprocal have yielded amazing results in flowers but also seems a little more resilient.
Den. Gina Perlite and Den. Aussie Hi-Lo are also great hybrids to look into.
