Default dendrobium miniature

hey everybody,

this is my first orchid i acquired from a local garden centre. it had quite a bit of scale but after many rounds with a toothbrush and pest oil, she's looking a lot better and flowering quite nicely.

originally there were 6 flower spikes but my cat decided to eat one of them so i'm left with 5.

i'm not entirely sure what dendrobium species or variety it is but i think it might be a dendrobium kingianum. any help with its identification would be much appreciated.

hope you enjoy the photos!

lovely! I believe you have the alba form of Den. kingianum, as you suspected.

good work with the toothbrush!

Looking at your plant now=its as if it never had any scale infestation. The leaves are clean and healthy....the correct shade of green meaning you are giving it the proper light....your efforts was rewarded with gorgeous flowers....CONGRATULATIONS for a happy healthy plant!

Really lovely!

I'm not sure it's quite kingianum var alba. I have one and the lip of yours does not quite look the same. Yours actually reminded me of my Den Ellen which is a hybrid of kingianum. My Ellen is not pure white, but the lip is that shape and with the same spotting.

I can't say that what you have is an Ellen, but I would guess what you have is a hybrid of kingianum.

This is my kingianum, see the difference in the lip shape.

This is my Ellen, again see how the lip is closer to yours. You can't see the pink blush on the petals so much in these pictures though.

thanks for all your kind and helpful comments everyone.

Bud, I must admit the scale infestation was not as bad as i initially thought. after a good toothbrushing and application of pest oil, I'm only noticing a couple of remaining scale insects loitering on leaves every week or so. all of which are easily picked off with little damage.

Rosie, thanks for your comment and photos. After closer inspection of your photos and my flowers, I agree that I must have a dendrobium ellen as your ellen flowers and mine look exactly the same. i only noticed the pink blush on flowers that had recently opened, older ones seem to have little to no pink blush.

I'll be sure to post progress photos as more flower buds open, one of which opened today!

cheers everyone

hey guys, it's been a touch over a year since i posted in this thread. i thought you might be interested in a couple of photos of the same den. ellen a year older.

last year there were 6 flower spikes (my cat at one) and this year there are 12 (my cat ate half of one), which is thanks to the several new psuedo-bulbs that developed over the recent growing season.

i hope you all enjoy these pictures

cheers
