Any idea about the kind of cane dendrobium is this? Male
Talking Any idea about the kind of cane dendrobium is this?

I have a NOID dendrobium that I rescued from my grandparent's neighbor's backyard. Since then it has been very robust and had two new growths and one new lead starting now but any idea how I should encourage it to flower. And any idea what type cane is this.

Sorry for the large picture as I am definetly not a computer person.

Sorry, can't see this image like another of yours.

I wonder if the google mail doesn't allow others to view the images. I've never tried using it for that

See the link in my signature for advice on posting pictures.

Without a photo of the flower, it would be extremely difficult to know for certain what it is. While it is true that someone can rule out certain Dendrobiums that are in certain sections, but still, many, many Dendrobiums look like the one in the photo, both species and hybrids.

But the photo did work this time and I didn't need the password. A very nice looking Dendrobium, but definitely get a picture of the flower.

I know that but how should I encourage this plant to bloom? So we can identify it.

Keep growing it as well as you have and give it lots of light. I agree with Sonya that it looks like something in section Phalaenanthe, probably a hybrid, but even with blooms you won't be able to confirm ID beyond section. Some folks will tell you "that's Dendrobium X" but there are so many hybrids of this kind, many unregistered, that it's impossible (and I'd argue irresponsible) to put a name to them without a tag. Nice plant!

Thanks but what was unusual I found with this plant was that the original part the four canes in the back that I saved had no roots and it was severely shriveled. But dendrobium canes don't usually plump up for me. But this NOID did so I am confused. But I will up the lighting a bit.

I wouldn't get too hung up on this. This is hardly what I'd consider an identifying factor. I'd more or less consider this a possible factor of whether the plant was healthy enough or had enough intact roots to plump back up.

I do agree with Nathaniel that if this is a hybrid, (which it is starting to sound a lot like it is), you will only most likely be able to identify it down to the section of Dendrobium this plant would be classified as.

Your plant could very well be something in section Phalaenanthe, (which is a very common hybrid nowadays). But it could also very easily be something in the section Spatulata - who knows...

I do know that it is most definitely not a Dendrobium in section Latouria nor is it in section Formosae.

Dendrobiums in section Formosae usually have black "hairs" on their canes.

Dendrobiums in section Latouria usually have a swelling in top 2/3 of the cane - they have pseudobulbs.

I also doubt that your plant is in section Callista/Densiflora. Hybrids are not commonly made from Dendrobiums in these sections.
