Hi everyone I have Den. Unicum sedling in a 1.5"
pot and I am considering mounting it. When is the best time to do it? Any caring tips?
Thanks

I'm not familiar with the species - I think when there is new root growth is probably a good time - but hopefully someone experienced with this one will chime in.
Hello ricki6901,
I have Den. Stardust 'Firebird', which has Den. unicum 50% as a parent. I treat it as a nobile, lots of water and fertiliser in summer and when temps drop, less water and no fertiliser until it blooms.
I know that Den. unicum is deciduous, and that older canes tend to look like dead sticks (yellow, shrunk and leafless) to the point that you think that the plant is dead.
I don't know about mounting though as I grow it in a pot.
Den unicum not only goes deciduous, it goes dormant during the winter as well.
You can mount it when it is still dormant, but right before it starts "waking up" for spring growing. This way the plant experiences less shock and establishes quicker.
It is a very sturdy species. Den unicum shouldn't be overly frustrating to grow.
I have a Dend. lindleyi that I mounted when it hadn't quite start to grow roots, it seems to be doing better than when I had mounted orchids that were in active growth. So what Philip says about mounting before it starts waking up is good advice. It should wake up soon or it may be waking up now so if you are going to mount it, probably best to do it now.
Here's a picture of a nice big one mounted: Den unicum They like lots of light.
I think the best time is mid-spring, when they start the new vegetation
lot of water during the summer, lots of light but not full sun.
fertilize regularly from mid-spring to mid-autumn, then reduce waterings and suspend for 3 months in winter.
maximum temperature also 40° C, minimum 2 ° C
