Dendrobium Bigibbum care??? Male
Default Dendrobium Bigibbum care???

I recently got this at Hausermann's here in Chicago and I know that it's a Dend Phal hybrid or I guess now called Dend Bigibbum. The tag only said Dend Hybrid.
Anyway, I have a couple other Den Phal's and I'm confused about their care. I've read that they like to dry out between waterings and don't require a "rest" like other Dends, but every time I see these in stores, they are either in moist spag or seem to be very moist at growers. The one I bought at Hausermann's is potted in very porous media, but was very wet and sitting in water. So I'm thinking that my other two plants at home have been kept very dry compared to what I've seen. My plants get quite a bit of sun and I've let them get pretty dry in between waterings. They seem to be doing pretty well, but I don't want to kill this new one! Thanks for any input.

I looked at the care instructions for Den. bigibbum in OrchidWiz. They like the same warm temps all year, or only slightly cooler in winter if need be. They do have a much drier period in winter for several months. Just a light misting now and then. When they are in active growth they are to be kept moist but make sure no water falls on new growths until they are several inches tall. A small pot and open fast draining media is recommended. Hope that helps. I'm sure others who grow them well will have some opinions too!

Dendrobium bigibbum is a species. It's likely your hybrid has bigibbum as a parent.

I have a mounted Den bigibbum (v compactum), a smaller variety, and a bigibbum hybrid that is potted. The mounted one does grow on the dry side even with daily watering. The potted hybrid I keep slightly moist moist of the year, but allow the media to dry in-between waterings in winter. Probably shouldn't be dry long while blooming.

Slightly cool in winter is ok, but they don't want to be very cool.
