Default new canes on dendrobium Gillieston Gold 'Natalie'

I purchased this plant last June and it flowered shortly in the fall. It looks to me like two new canes are growing (pics 3 and 4). Pic 2 shows a growth that was present when I bought the orchid. It never grew much so I tried to 'help' it by carefully peeling away some of the sheath and the leaves had this folded appearance. I'm guessing this one is a lost cause, but have high hopes for the other two. What would cause such a stunted growth? Lack of water and/or light? Thanks for the advice.

Being too dry while the new growth is developing can cause the crimping - I don't know if that is the case here.
