That is beautiful. I love your outside container also.
I saw some Nobile's at my local nursey this past week-end but they were asking $40.00 for a 4 inch pot and was a little too much for me.

Hi,
Thank you for your comment. I am sure you will get good results. I am only a beginner I think keeping them cool in the winter just water sparingly and around Jan. you should see buds start. I then start feeding. Mine is in the conservatory facing east I just have 2 tube heaters.
Good luck Pam.

Rosie- sometimes, these plants are bought in the late spring or even early summer in bloom. Then the growing season start late and canes may not mature by the end of the year. Sometimes plants may hault growing as temperature cools. This will produce much shorter canes.
Not enough warmth during growth phase slows down the growing rate and may also result in shorter canes or canes that do not mature on time.

If you have facility where you can control temperature (which I don't think most people have), you can keep them warm until canes mature and then cool them to set buds.
This is not recommended because this will apparently delay the whole growing cycle.

The easiest way to go is to let the plant get used to your growing schedule.
Usually starting the second year, they should follow normal pattern of growing and flowering.

Dormant period is halloween to valentine (at least according to temperate regions in the US) from when the weather starts to fall and when the weather starts to warm up.
Following natural season is most convenient, but you can manipulate a little by ending the cool dormant earlier.
Many hybrids only need about 28 days of cool treatment (according to the commecial website info).
Some hybrids need longer cooling period and shortcutting this cooling may result in poor results.
My orietnal smile is a good example of this.

From your description, I think you are doing great with watering. fixed schedule is never good.

Even if you don't see any flowers one season say, due to late maturing of the cane(s), they will eventually bloom the following season given proper care and the required cooling treatment.

Good luck!

I had wondered if that was the case with mine. Mine was delivered to me in full flower in early March as a leaving present from the place I used to work. Not sure if that is late but I do know that one was closer to the canes maturing than the other. The second was bought as a late birthday present for my MIL I think it was bought in April with buds just opening. She gave it to me in August because she was going away for several weeks and said to keep it as she always kills orchids. Anyway, that one as always seemed behind the other.

Anyway we'll see what they do this year

As some fertilizer most likely be still present in the mix, earlier hault is probably safer.
I stop fertilizing my nobiles in July or August which is when mine normally nears the end of growing phase.

During the dormant, do not allow plants go bone dry as this is bad unlike many people faithfully believe.
Since they are not growing during this time, they dont' take much water but they still need water to stay alive and for preparation of buds and all.
How cool you keep nobiles during the dormant period decided how you want to water them.
Main focus is to prevent root rots but keep the plants sufficiently hydrated.
I used to keep all mine at a friend's unheated south facing sun room. It gets pretty cold but never freezing at night. During the day, it gets pretty warm (almost hot) on sunny winter days but when there's overcast, not so warm.
I would water accordinly to the weather. You don't want to keep your plants too wet during cold time.
I would follow weather news and water (or soak) early morning of sunny days (about once week or so)
If weather continued on to be quite cold even during the day, then I would not water or if plants are too dry and pots feel too light, I would just mist like crazy!
You may err on the slightly drier side than wetter side to avoid possible rot.
I haven't rot any and all flowered like fabulous little (some not so little) bunch of bouquet!

PAM- Did this gift come with a name tag by chance?
I'm just curious.

I love your setting, the vase complements the blossom nicely I think.
Just to let you know the pot is by Portmerion botanical pattern.
