Default Dendrobium Oriental Smile "Fantasy" AD/AOS

I love nobiles, but because I no longer have an option to keep them cool enough druing the winter, I got rid of all but this one, just to see how it will fare with out enough cooling.

Mine sits by south facing window all year long.
The night does get cooler, but not cool enough for these.

Well, I have to say I was excited to see the tiny nubbins poking out on the canes in December, although there were only a few.

The tallest cane bloomed in its full glory last season. The same cane made some more spikes this time, two toward the top and another set of two toward the lower part of the cane. 10 flowers total.

The newer cane that is blooming for the first time this season is only making two spikes on the top two nodes with 3 flowers, very poor performance, but flowers are quite big and so colorful, and clustered closely together, I still enjoy.

And boy, they smell so nice!

Two of the newer canes are working on new shoots.
I'll have to try stikcing this in the fridge for the next season to see if that will help, but then I would have to chop down that tallest cane. It is so tall!!!

Enjoy~

Oh, the first four pictures are from previous two seasons when it got proper cool rest. Amazing, isn't it???
The second picture shows my friend's unheated balcony where my nobiles would stay for the winter.

I see about two or three more swelling eyes. hopefully more spikes to come!

What gorgeous color! Incredible pictures from the years that were able to give it proper care, too.

I'm glad you all like it.

Well, describing scent is so difficult.
Have you smelled Den.Love Memory? It's pretty much the same as that one. I find many of these smell the same and only very subtle difference.

To me, Fancy Angel Lycee, Yellow Song Canary, Oriental Smile Fantasy , Love Memory Fizz all smell the same, but increasing intensity in the order I listed.
Then Red Emperor Prince is still similar but more distinct scent of its own.
I wish I had kept Red Emperor Prince as I do not see this variety that often. wonder how that one would have performed here this year. oh, well...

Lightly sweet floral, honey, slightly musky? What's nice about the fragrance of these nobile hybrids is that it is so light and refreshing as opposed to heavy overpowering thick fragrance of many oncidiums cattleyas.

Thank you! This is one of my favorites. I got it so cheap at a show years ago.
I bought a few more each year just for home deco and this one always has the largest flowers!

I often keep the first picture as my phone background.
Very exotic coloring I think.

This variety blooms very well I think. I had about 5 different varieties, and this one and Love Memory were the best as far as flowering goes.

Did you keep all your nobiles the same way and only OS Fantasy had buds blasting??
If so, that is strange...

I buy lots of these each spring in bud. My place is quite dry and hot, yet all the nobiles I bring home open up without a single blasting. these are a lot more adaptable than I thought.

11 loss out of 12 is just unacceptable!
all that wait and anticipation

Thank you all!
The name "Fantasy" really suits this plant well I think. It's like a tropical sunset.
