Can Lindleyi have yellow blooms instead of orange? Pics to come, as the first spike is blooming now.

From my notes:

Tag Name: dend. Aggregatum now known as Lindleyi

Source: Krull and Smith

Acquired: December 2012

Parentage: species

Characteristics: small ovate pseudo bulbs with similarly sized ovate leaves, one per bulb. They grow very close together and the spikes emerge from a joint about two thirds up from the bottom of the bulbs.

Scent: unknown

Care & Culture: I've been told these plants need a cool period and should water only when the bulbs wrinkle. I have found the ones I got are always wrinkled and I simply water until the water runs through the pot every day, or near every day.

Remarks: as soon as I moved this plant into my grow area, they spiked. I lost one from physically snapping it off but now it is safely hung under t5 lamps in the back of my set up where is easily dries out between waterings. It has many spikes and I was expecting an orange flower but the first spike is opening and its a light yellow green flower instead.

Yup. As far as I know they start of being light yellow and the color deepens and become more warm egg yolk towards orange (at least in the middle) as the flower ages.

Enjoy the flowers! I love these types of dendrobiums! The lindleyi and jenkinsiis must be two of my favorites orchids. So bring on the pictures, please!

Mine are nowhere close to flowering. I can only expect them to put on a show in July-September or so.

Ok that makes sense. Lots of flowers change their colors as they age. Ill post pics soon. I was surprised by how fast the spikes grew. From nub to flower in about a month and a half.

I know! Mine too. It feels like you just barely notice that there are spikes forming before they are in full flower. Got to admit, I prefer that to those that make you wait for half a year...

I think you are just running into another person's idea of 'orange' compared to their idea of 'yellow'; Lindleyi has a deeper yellow patch at the base of the lip. I would not consider this color 'orange' by any stretch of my imagination - golden yellow, yes - orange, never.
If you look in the Internet Orchid Species Photo Encyclopedia they have a really good close-up of the blooms along with a shot of the inflorescence; I use this resource often as I find their photos are really pretty good at depicting correct colors. Den. lindleyi is #345 in the Dendrobium listings, just to make it a little easier to find. Plus they give a great description of where to find the plant in the wild, the elevation and moisture needs. I have found it rather invaluable in searching for species requirements.

But that one is very lemon yellow! Unless the colours in the picture is a bit deceiving.

I've only seen them with warmer yellow colouring previously. Looks like a nice spike though!

I assure you the colors are spot on! I love the plant so I'm not disappointed, but was surprised to see how different the color was compared to others I've seen.

This is how I know them.

But I have to say that that cold yellow colour is also pretty cool!

Agreed! I never saw a yellow before... Not even close to yellow. I wonder how dependent the color of these are on temps. I run my grow area at a 68 low, 78 high every single day.
