First steps for a Newbie?
Question First steps for a Newbie?

Hello,
So far I only grew Phals and they seemed to like it.

I'm eyeing a new plant and a new territory - Phal types Dens sold at Safeway.

What are the first steps, especially bug control, after one brings a new Den home? I'm paranoid about bugs so would love to spray them with something that would eliminate any potential problem. I have pre-made Neem Oil spray from Rona and End All II by Safer's on hand. Would this work? (As I'm in Canada, 3 in 1 systematic is not available here.) Can I spray flowers as well? No??

Are there any other precautions (like we always advise to check roots with the new Phals.)??

Your suggestions are much, much appreciated!

Lilia

when you bring it home spray it with neem oil, then keep it away from other orchids for a while to make sure there are no bugs so they wont spread. dont spray flowers though, it may kill them. carefully inspect roots, if they are nice place it back in the old pot with the medium still attached. they are tougher than phals just give them bright light, drier conditions, piece of cake!!
hope this helps

If it's blooming, I'd wait til after before unpotting, unless you have concerns about the roots. I suspect these may not be as forgiving as many Phals can be about being fussed with while blooming. Shouldn't harm the plant overall, but may lose the blooms.
