Dendrobium goldschmidtianum
Default Dendrobium goldschmidtianum

Hi everyone!,

So I recently went to a Fall orchid sale at an estate in the town next to mine. My boyfriend and I went on the second day of the sale (and man did the Massachusetts orchid society folks clean the place out on the first) and I had the opportunity to purchase one of my wish-list Dendrobiums for only 22$! a pretty large Dendrobium goldschmidtianum. I've always seen pictures of them being grow upright and pinned up and very scraggly and all over the place. This one seems so much cleaner and more organised and lends so well to hanging habit I just had to have it!!

It has one little itty bitty cane flowering and then a TON of leaved canes both hanging and upright. My guess is that the 1 baby cane flowering is probably the oldest, the hanging ones are the next year or so, and the upright shorter ones are this years? I had a question about the leaves though!

I know it's a deciduous orchid but I wanted opinions on what was normal loss and what I might expect. I think that this particular plant has basically been grown with year round consistent care in both water and ferts because It's SO green and far too large to be so young as to not have a few canes that have been around at least a year or more. All the canes that are hanging and a few of the upright ones have the lowest leaf on the cane yellowing. Is this the normal course? How quickly will these canes drop leaves? I know that kind of leaf loss can be from deficiencies in other orchids/plants.

As for care the internet tells me it should get less water and no fertilizer for the winter, but how often is less? most of my others are completely dry resters.

Excuse the Iphone quality/College Dorm room photos!
