I couldn't resist the beautiful photos posted by Leisurely a few weeks back of his
black/purple dendrobiums. So I went and ordered one of those crosses for myself.
Now I have a number of orchids that I grow with reasonable success under lights, but my only prior attempts at dendrobium types ended as a complete failure. I killed two den. victoria reginae, before coming to the conclusion that my non-airconditioned summers were way too hot for that cool-growing species.
So does anyone have dendrobium specific advice to help me succeed with this cross?
The plant is pretty big, but the roots were not particularly healthy when I received it. I ended up cutting off over 2/3 of the root mass that was dead/rotten. I treated the remaining roots with a systemic fungicide, and potted in a ceramic pot using the 'dendrobium' potting mix that repotme.com sells. It's now preparing to shed two leaves, but I'm not sure if that's just a normal reaction to bare-root shipping+repotting, or if I have more problems on the horizon.
