Dendrobium Nobile trying to new plants from old cane Male
Default Dendrobium Nobile trying to new plants from old cane

So I have this NoId Nobile that I bought without blooms in July last year (2011). In December I moved and it was quite neglected. It spent all winter outside withstanding some frost (-5°/ -7°) for some days. One of the old canes has grown a keiki which is already quite big, with lots of roots. The other canes didn't show any sign of growth, so I just cut them off, cut them into pieces and put them in a clear tupper with sphag and put the tupper outside in light shade, next to some of my orchids. Before putting everything into the tupper I soaked it first in water with some Superthrive and a bit of Physan 20. I'll try to remember taking the lid off at night to get some fresh air and put it back on in the morning. Keep you posted with the results.

The only cutting you might have luck with is the one on the far left.

On the 3rd & 4th cuttings, all of the nodes have bloomed, so they cannot produce keikis or bloom again. The 2nd & 4th are too hard, dry & skinny to produce keikis.

Good luck.

If just one of them produces keikis I'll already be more than satisfied. Time will tell.

I had a look at them today and here are the first results. Since i put them into this tupper, I've added some more canes, so now I don't know from which plant the canes come from. I also had to throw two away. They were all yellow and soft.

I changed the sphagnum for leca. I think there is less danger of fungi. There's something swelling on the most little and thick piece of cane.

Busy with exactly the same. Still got mine on sphagnum. They've been there for...what...ages now, but they are still green and plump, so they are alive, and not rotting or drying up yet. I think I see something happening on two of them now.

I like your leca idea, but I don't have access to that. I've had canes on river sand before and that worked well. Not quite sure why I opted for sphagnum this time...come to think of it, I might just make it a weekend project to shift them into river sand.

My experience is that it's normally possible to make canes shoot, but then to look after the seedlings...that's a different matter altogether and for my part...with very low success rate.

Good luck with yours! Keep us updated on the progress!
