Default dendrobium bellatulum

In general I'm not very successful with dendrobiums, they tend to sulk a long time and then die, esp. when they are described as "easy". I couldn't believe it when this one started to spike, and now blooms. I overwintered it with my schoenorchis fragrans and mediocalcar decoratum, all of which have bloomed. I'll do the same next winter.

Excellent - this is not the easiest plant, so you are to be commended.

Thanks Ron. I was told it was a fuss-pot, so I didn't expect it to last. Then again, my percei took 2 years to produce the 1st. bloom, and only now seems to take off.

Hehe I can sort of relate, tho have done well with most of my Dens, but in general sometimes feel like "spare me from orchids described as 'easy' "

Beautiful blooms! Isn't it interesting how sometimes the "easy" plants seem to be anything but easy.

How wonderful! How do you grow this? Warm winter temps? I have no luck with hardware store Phal type dendrobiums either. But the fussy ones bloom regularly for me. I have a den farmeri in spike right now. I want to try my hands on a cruentum.

Roby: you should! I'm sure that in your climate you could even leave it outside in the winter. Annak, I think you could too. I can't because the nights here can go as low as -40C, so I have to compromise. I grow mine in a terrarium where the temps. are quite constant, between 16 and 21 C during the day, and a few degrees lower at night. It only gets watered once every 7-10 days, but I keep the rh at around 60%. In late winter/spring when the night temps stay around 1C, and I can open the windows, the night temps can fall as low as 10C. I hope this helps.

Thanks for the info!!
Yes, the temps you mention are o.k. for the winter, though not outside, as we get as low as zeros often and below 10 is a standard. During summer we have 30s for long periods, and I grow some intermediate in south facing verandas, with no big problems. I will try, and see what happens... Thanx again
