I once saw an area where all of the dandelions were like this. Some had several joined and had very wide, flat stems.

No, it was actually out in the country on the lawn of a cottage. I wondered if perhaps they could have used some sort of chemical on the lawn but this seems unlikely because the lawn was a cottage type lawn. It had more weeds than grass. On the same lawn we found a huge patch of 4, 5, 6 and 7 leaf clovers!

How strange, there has to be something in the soil causing the mutation, especially if it's happening to multiple species.

Yes, it was really odd. Especially since it was in the country, in Northern Ontario.
