Dendrobium Golden Aya
Dendrobium Golden Aya
(Den. aphrodite x Den. capillipes)
Hybridized by Nagasaka; Year of Registration: 1985
Permeatingly fragrant, temperature tolerant, Dendrobium primary hybrid. Graceful sprays of long lasting 2.5" flowers(6 to 7 weeks). The canes of this Dendrobium look similar to the nobile-type, but the flowers are on longer racemes. I did not have to dry it out quite as much as the nobile-type, I give it a bit of dry in the winter months. The flowers have a heady sour citrusy and pine smell that is noticeable early in the morning all across the room. Compact growth habit with multi-spikes per cane.
LightRequirement: Strong 2000+ F.C. on bright shaded sun southfacing baywindow.
I water it every other day while in bloom until it grows keikis and leaves...in the summer it is watered once a week, since it is very hot and humid in my area...on December 15th this doesnt get watered or fertilizer until I see buds growing out of it....then I begin the watering regimen and the fertilizer once again.

I love the yellow. Maybe someday I'll get patient enough to attempt to grow a nobile dendrobium or dendrobium that wants a winter rest. I'm such a "waterer" that I think I would go insane during the dry rest months!
Are the pictures upside down or do you grow it upside down? I've heard of some people growing Dend. anosum orchids upside down (or suspended) so I was curious.

Thank You, Grasshopper !
It is mounted on a square treefern slab. The roots are trying to escape to the air and the basal keikis are also going berzerk wanting to escape but its all tied down to each other. I like them clumped rather than dividing them into smaller pieces.
It is suspended to display its magnificent canes and blooms.
Its easy to overwater them if they are mounted or in a loose large coarse bark medium.
The winter rest is just a couple of weeks...you can put them in a cool dry sunny place and forget them for two weeks or maybe more...but if you see the buds coming out...you can overwater them again...
I love the bright yellow dendrobiums (I also have the aggregatum which is currently sulking because I have just recently repotted it)
dont be scared, go for it...the flowers and the fragrance are well worth it.
