Slightly concerned about Den Victoria-Reginae

Hi all,

I purchased a den victoria reginae in august. It had one mature cane and a small new growth. In the past months the new cane has doubled in size and started to put out a thick new root...which promptly turned black and rotten away.

Concerned, I repotted the plant into fresh fine media. The roots from the old growth are numerous and a healthy green. Should I be concerned about the failed root on the new growth? Or since the old roots are healthy, I should not worry about it? I grow this orchid under lights, with similar conditions as my paphs.

Suggestions?

My victoria reginae has just bloomed and it is getting ready for winter rest...but it still have all its leaves so I am just watering it every other week with fertilizer...it is in a bright shaded southern bay window in my apartment in the East Village...I put all my dendrobiums in bright shady sunlight...
as for the roots: they dont like to be cold; I get tepid water for them in winter because even if they have full heater: they are in front of the windowsill and it tends to get cold a foot away from the glass...make sure its not too hot...use your elbow as tester just like the baby formula

Here's a pic of the little guy. You'd have to take my word that there's a decent sized mass of thin green roots under the potting mix, since I didn't take any pics while repotting.

I thought the victoria reginae didn't like too much light and didn't need a winter rest? I have it growing under the same growlight as my paphs and phals (which seem to be doing very well). The vendor also emphasized to grow these on the wet side (relative to other orchids) so I have been watering it more like I would a paph than a phal, if that makes sense.

It looks like a happy healthy plant...you got the watering regimen and the fertilizer weekly weakly plus the culture is down pat... it will survive with your other plants...just make sure to have a oscillating small electric fan ...and if you have a humidifier(humidity tray can also work=plastic basin with pebbles=make sure the water doesnt touch the roots)

Victoria-reginae is a cold -hot grower (IOSPE) - mine is outdoors year-round, taking temps down to around freezing for short periods, tho sheltered from frost - and does not want a winter rest

They need to be kept evenly humid and moist throughout the year

Moderate to low light, tho slightly brighter in winter is ok. (or so I have read, mine is very shaded where it grows in winter)

I don't know what may have caused the new root to rot, but agree that your plant looks good, and if the older roots all look good, probably no need for worry.

I grow my Dend. victoria reginae in the smallest clay pot I can fit it in. I do not give it a winter rest. It is in a terrarium with high humidity and circulation, but it does completely dry out between weakly waterings. It is on its second bloom of the season. I can't say what may have caused the root rot. It could be a few things, but I would ignore it for now, and moniter the plants new root growth. If it persists, then perhaps you can repost the problem and see what is suggested. I also mist the new arieal roots that have formed as opposed to being prone to over water. With the fine mix you added, make sure it doesn't get too water loggged, which can almost always cause rotting.
